Tas charges against Bob Brown dismissed

Charges against environmental campaigner Bob Brown have been officially dismissed in a Hobart court with the former politician now chasing the government to pay his legal costs.

The ex-Australian Greens leader had been charged with refusing to leave a business area while conducting a peaceful anti-logging protest.

"The police acted honourably but the government's anti-protest laws are a shambles and should be withdrawn," Dr Brown, who's challenging the Tasmanian laws in the High Court, said on Tuesday.

"I was arrested beside a road which was being specifically bulldozed to give access to the logging.

"That this road is now seen as a 'business premises', rather than an access to a business premises, points to the absurdity of the (Premier Will) Hodgman laws."

Charges against fellow campaigner Jessica Hoyt were also dismissed in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday after Tasmania Police had previously dropped them.

Both defendants are seeking costs from the government.

Dr Brown was arrested in January when protesting against logging in northwest Tasmania's Lapoinya State Forest.

While the charges have been dismissed Dr Brown, 71, will push ahead with plans for a High Court challenge against the legislation which he says is undemocratic.
