Tables, chairs thrown at Vic darts comp

Costume-clad louts have caused havoc at an international darts tournament, upturning tables and throwing chairs.

Some spectators were built a chair pyramid during the chaos at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne on Saturday night.

It was the second evening of the Darts Invitational Challenge, featuring big names such as Australian Simon 'The Wizard' Whitlock.

Police arrived about 9pm (AEDT) and didn't make any arrests, but about 40 people were booted from the venue.

Etihad Stadium chief executive Paul Sergeant said the behaviour from a "mindless minority" was "deplorable" and "their wanton acts of destruction" an absolute disgrace.

"Unfortunately, some loutish and inappropriate behaviour from just a very small group impacted on the entertainment for the majority of the thousands of fans who attended the events over two nights," he said in a statement.

Mr Sergeant said online footage possibly dramatised the incident.

"At the end of the day a number of plastic chairs were thrown, some tables were upturned but it is debatable as to whether there was any violence involved," he said.

Mr Sergeant said a review of the incident would determine why issues emerged, and how to prevent them in the future.

Etihad Stadium had an alcohol management plan in place, and was serving only mid-strength beer.

Photos and video footage from the event show a number of revellers in fancy dress, such as Hawaiian shirts and superhero-type garb.
