A pipe bomb found outside a regional Victorian school has been detonated by police.

The bomb was detonated by the bomb squad about 7.15pm on Tuesday near Brauer College in Warrnambool, local media report.

Members from Victoria Police's bomb squad were called to the town after the bomb was discovered at a bus stop near the school about 3pm.

The school was evacuated and students escorted off the premises while police set up roadblocks.

People were urged to avoid the area but some local businesses remained open.

Experts used a bomb disposal robot to handle the explosive, which was moved to an area with sandbags, the Warrnambool Standard reports.

A Country Fire Authority brigade was on stand-by to assist police.
