A robbery at a sushi train restaurant in Adelaide was derailed by customers of an all-night bakery nearby, police say.

Customers at North Adelaide's Bakery On O'Connell called police when they heard smashing glass across the road about 4.30am on Saturday.

Police arrived to find the front door of Katana Sushi Train had been smashed with a brick and the cash till had been stolen.
