Struggling Vic TAFEs to share $20m

Seven struggling TAFE institutes will share the first $20 million instalment of emergency funding from the Victorian government.

The recipients include the William Angliss Institute, a specialist hospitality training provider in Melbourne's CBD.

"The Labor government is rebuilding our TAFE system and rescuing institutes like William Angliss, so young Victorians can get the skills they need for the jobs they want," Education Minister James Merlino told reporters on Tuesday.

Mr Merlino said the Andrews government was working to put TAFE on a sustainable footing, in accordance with its election promise, and following funding cut-backs by the former Napthine government.

Operating losses across Victoria's TAFE system are forecast to reach $71.8 million for 2014.

The $20 million is the first instalment of a $320 million TAFE rescue package promised by Labor.
