Police want to identify a man in a large straw hat and a black SUV vehicle over a hit-run crash in outer Melbourne that left driver critically injured.

It's alleged the drivers of two vehicles began arguing at Lyndhurst about 6pm last Saturday, as they drove north along Glasscocks Road.

The driver of a Volkswagen sedan and his passenger exited their vehicle and approached the second vehicle, believed to be a black SUV.

The SUV fled and is yet to be found.

On Friday, investigators released CCTV of the vehicle and an image of a man they believe can assist.

The male driver is perceived to be of Pacific Islander appearance and wearing a large straw hat.

Any witnesses who saw the crash or may have dash cam footage should contact Crime Stoppers.
