It's the end of October and spring looks to have finally arrived in Melbourne after wet and chilly conditions over the weekend.

Racegoers shivered on Saturday through the second coldest Cox Plate in the event's 94-year history.

Wild winds brought down trees and heavy rain swept the city - with the mercury only hitting 13.2 degrees on Saturday and it didn't get much better on Sunday.

But the weather is expected to improve during the week, with a maximum of 24C forecast for Tuesday and the mercury tipped to hover around the high teens and early-20s for the rest of the week.
