Spotlight back on Vic 'no-pursuit' policy

Someone has evaded police for a week while driving a stolen Porsche erratically around Melbourne - again shining the spotlight on Victoria Police's controversial pursuit policy.

The driver of the Porsche Cayenne, stolen from a Mornington car yard eight days ago, is yet to be caught despite being spotted by police on patrol in Frankston and Seaford over the past few days.

"Due to the erratic behaviour of the driver, driving at high speeds, disobeying traffic control signals and travelling with no headlights on, police have not been able to intercept the vehicle," police said in a statement on Friday.

It's believed the driver has been changing the registration plates each night.

Victoria Police's current policy prevents officers from pursuing a vehicle for theft or minor traffic offences.

It's been criticised as too soft by the police union which argues hoons are being given a green light to break the law.
