A 15-year-old Melbourne teenager with five passengers squeezed into his car has been nabbed doing 220km/h.

Officers began chasing the Holden Commodore when the front-seat passenger hung out of the window and yelled abuse as the sedan passed the stationary police vehicle.

Police followed the Holden as it accelerated sharply and intercepted it travelling at 220km/h in an 80km/h zone in Mulgrave after 2.15am.

The driver, a 15-year-old from Hampton Park, has been released pending summons.

The vehicle was impounded for 30 days; the owner will have to pay $733 to get it back.
