Speeding Vic motorist loophole closed

A loophole that allowed speeding Victorian motorists with a good record to get out of fines will be closed.

Motorists will no longer be able to apply for an official warning if they are caught speeding more than 10km/h over the limit.

The changes to the official warning criteria will come into effect on September 21.

The change sends a strong safety message to road users, according to Road Policing Command Superintendent Kevin Sheridan.

"I think the community will agree that a motorist caught speeding at 54 km/h in a school zone shouldn't be eligible for a warning" he said.

Motorists will still be able to apply for an official warning under provisions for special or exceptional circumstances.

Those with a good driving record can still appeal for an official warning if caught speeding less than 10 kilometres over the limit.
