South Yarra stabbing suspect may be responsible for previous attack

The man who violently stabbed a 38-year-old at his South Yarra home may be behind another assault, Victoria Police have said.

Detectives have been told the victim was at home with his family in Osborne Street, South Yarra, when he noticed a man loitering in an adjacent car park about 6.10pm on Saturday.

The victim approached the man, who ran off, but police believe the same man returned later with a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.

The attacker then fled the crime scene. He ran north on Osborne Street and then east across a pedestrian bridge over railway lines, police said.

The victim remains in a serious condition in hospital.

Police believe the offender may be responsible for an earlier assault at a South Yarra shop near Chapel Street, when a man ran at a store manager with a steel can. The attacker then chased out of the store by security.

The 32-year-old manager suffered a serious head injury.

The attacker remains on the run.
