Armed police make dramatic arrest in Melb

Heavily armed police have arrested a man in a town south of Melbourne after making him crawl across the front lawn of a residential home.

The Special Operations Group arrested the 26-year-old man in Mornington on Friday morning as part of an ongoing investigation into a number of burglaries and thefts, Victoria Police said in a statement.

The man was arrested in Pamela Place "without incident".

Footage from a Seven Network news helicopter shows the man crawling across the lawn as armed police train their guns on the 26-year-old.

He is then told to lie down with his hands behind his back and is then handcuffed.

Mornington resident Mitchell Beer told AAP an armoured vehicle "full of heavily armed police" and a handful of police vehicles sped past him with lights and sirens blaring about 10am.

Friday's arrest followed the explosion of a homemade device - believed to be a petrol bomb - in nearby Dorothy Crescent about 8pm on Thursday.

AAP understands the two incidents are unrelated.

No one was injured when the device detonated near an empty car parked outside a home, a police spokesman said.

The area remained cordoned off on Friday morning.
