Six rock climbers rescued in Tasmania

Six climbers have been rescued from Tasmania's famous Candlestick rock formation.

The adventure seekers were rescued from the base of Cape Hauy using a police vessel on Boxing Day after an emergency personnel beacon was activated on Christmas night.

A helicopter crew saw flashing torch lights near the rock stack formation the "Candlestick" in Fortescue Bay about 8pm on Wednesday, after the group couldn't complete a return traverse to Cape Hauy.

A vessel unsuccessfully tried to rescue the climbers, so plans were made for them to stay the night.

The group was rescued early on Thursday in a police vessel with a woman suffering rope burns to her hands, and another choosing to walk back to the camping ground on foot.
