A man shot in the shoulder by police after allegedly driving at officers and ramming two police cars in Melbourne's west has been charged with multiple offences.

Two officers had been watching the 36-year-old Ararat man and a woman at a Tullamarine car park just after midnight on Friday before getting out of their unmarked car to identify themselves.

They allege the man then drove at the officers and two police cars, prompting one of the officers to fire his gun.

The shot hit the man and he was then taken to hospital before being charged on Monday with several counts of exposing a police officer to risk by driving.

He has also been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, criminal damage, stealing a motor vehicle and handling stolen goods.

He has been remanded and will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old Stawell woman with him was also arrested, but was released from custody pending further questioning.
