Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is pitching in to help the Les Twentyman Foundation after thousands of donated books and gifts for the needy were destroyed by fire.

The foundation ran a back-to-school program in rooms above the Little Siagon Market in Footscray, but the supermarket was gutted by fire on Tuesday.

Mr Shorten, whose electorate borders the area, is organising a lunch to be held on Friday at Melbourne's Crown hotel for 100 guests, with all proceeds going to the foundation.
