Sexting at elite Vic school

A boy at an elite Melbourne school allegedly tricked a fellow student into sending him intimate pictures by posing as a girl online.

Police are investigating claims the Camberwell Grammar School student then showed the compromising picture to other students.

The incident was uncovered when a student who saw the photo reported it to the school.

Police on Thursday confirmed an investigation was underway.

"As there is an ongoing investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further," Victoria Police spokesman Adam West told AAP.

Camberwell Grammar School says the incident, in which one young boy sought to embarrass the other by seeking the compromising photo, was dealt with some weeks ago.

The school sought advice from Victoria Police at the time and says it was assured the incident would be treated as one which should result in counselling rather than further investigation.

The boys involved have been counsellsed and disciplined by the school, with the support of their parents, the school says in a statement.

The school said Victoria Police had assured them on Thursday that they had not received a formal complaint.
