Victoria's coastal and alpine areas are subject to a severe weather warning with damaging winds forecast to reach 100km/h.

A cold front is moving rapidly eastwards towards Victoria, and will pass through Bass Strait on Friday night, the Bureau of Meterology says.

Locations likely to be hit with strong gusts include Warrnambool, Portland, Wonthaggi, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.

King Island and Tasmania's northern coast are also in the warning zone.

People living in coastal areas, including the Mornington Peninsula, are being advised to move cars away from trees and secure loose items.
