Severe weather warning as winds batter Victoria

Wild winds are set to batter parts of Victoria with a severe weather warning in place.

Damaging wind gusts of up to 100 km/h could hit areas including Stawell and across to Daylesford and Melbourne's outer east, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

"We are expecting damaging winds averaging between 60 to 70 km per hour but there could also be gusts of up to 100 km per hour," senior forecaster Beren Bradsaw told AAP.

Wind gusts in the alpine regions including towns like Mansfield, Bright and Falls Creek could get gusts of up to 120km/h.

"Winds have picked up already but they will start to ease from tomorrow morning," Ms Bradshaw said.

Wet conditions have also started to hit much of the state, particularly in alpine areas, according to the weather bureau.

Falls between 10 and 15mm are expected for the Melbourne metro area, but most of the rain will fall inland.

The biggest falls on Saturday were at Blackwood, northwest of Melbourne which recorded 20mm since 9am.
