A man who fatally shot his girlfriend in the head will find out next month his sentence for her manslaughter.

Nelson Lai, 35, was cleared of murder but found guilty of the 2013 manslaughter of Rekiah O'Donnell, 22, after telling the Victorian Supreme Court he wasn't looking where the gun was pointed because he didn't think it was loaded.

At Lai's plea hearing on Tuesday, prosecutor Andrew Grant said the odds were "astronomical" that Lai shot Ms O'Donnell without knowingly pointing the gun at her.

Defence barrister Kevin Doyle said the prosecution was speculating to fill gaps in its case.

Justice Michael Croucher will sentence Lai on July 31.
