Five deaths on Vic roads over weekend

Five people are dead after a weekend of carnage on Victoria's roads.

There have been three major crashes, two of them resulting in double fatalities.

A man aged in his 70s drove his car onto the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming car in Carrum Downs, in Melbourne's southeast, about 1.45pm on Sunday.

A woman was killed while her male passenger, and the elderly man, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

There was another head-on collision on the Midland Highway at Avonmore, in central Victoria, about 1.15pm on Sunday.

The driver and a passenger from one of the cars died at the scene, while the driver and a passenger from the other car survived.

The other double fatality, claiming the lives of an 11-year-old girl and a woman aged in her 80s, occurred on Saturday evening.

The pair died in hospital after the crash at Irymple, near Mildura.

A 22-year-old Mildura man has been charged with two counts of culpable driving and two counts of dangerous driving causing death over the Irymple crash.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Mildura Magistrates Court on Monday.

The crashes take Victoria's road toll to 240 compared to 239 at the same time in 2014.
