Third night in Vic bush for missing man

A bushwalker is still missing after two days in Victoria's remote alpine region despite a full-scale search involving ground crews and police aircraft.

Taddeo Haigh, 31, left for a walk from the Sawmill Settlement in Merrijig on Sunday night and has not returned.

The engineer faces a third night in the bush after searchers were unable to locate him by nightfall on Tuesday.

The search will resume at first light on Wednesday, Victoria Police say.

Conditions in the Mount Buller region are expected to drop to 8C overnight. Temperatures fell to 6.8C on Sunday night, with a minimum of 4C on Monday night.

Mr Haigh's wife Elizabeth - who spent hours searching for him after he didn't return to the holiday rental they shared with four friends - is worried he may be injured.

"It's just really hard not knowing where he is," she told reporters.

"I feel like he's either lost, or at this stage he's been injured and can't actually get back."

Police first conducted a ground search of the area on Monday morning.

On Tuesday, police aircraft joined the search co-ordinated by Victoria's Search and Rescue Squad, which also had the assistance of local police, the dog squad, and mounted police.

The SES and Parks Victoria are also involved, along with bushwalking volunteers from Bush Search and Rescue Victoria.

Tuesday's search focused on dense bushland near the area Mr Haigh was last seen, but police would also like to hear from motorists who travelled through the nearby town of Mansfield in the past 36 hours.

He's described as Caucasian with a medium build and light brown hair.

The unshaven Mr Haigh was last seen wearing a grey hoodie, dark jeans and brown shoes.
