One of Melbourne's most prestigious schools is reaching out to former students, acknowledging for the first time that at least five were abused on its grounds.

In a letter sent to thousands of former students, Scotch College also admits it settled claims dating back to the 1960s - mostly related to sexual abuse, The Age newspaper reports.

"We are concerned that throughout their lives, some Old Boys may have suffered trauma that continues to impact on their health and wellbeing," the letter says.

"OSCA (Old Scotch Collegians Association) and the School take matters most seriously, seeking both to support Old Boys and assist them to contact appropriate agencies and authorities."

It is understood six claims were settled for acts of abuse in the 1960s, and no claims are currently outstanding.

The school has been contacted for comment.
