A man who drove to the shops to buy salt for dinner was more than three times over the legal limit in Melbourne on Christmas Day.

The 31-year-old from Cranbourne North, was stopped at a shopping centre about 9.20pm and told officers he had driven five minutes from home to buy salt after spending the day drinking alone.

He was taken to Narre Warren Police Station where police say he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.173 per cent. His licence was immediately cancelled and he will be charged by summons to appear in court at a later date.
