A man has been charged over the stabbing of a Melbourne convenience store worker during a botched robbery that allegedly ended with him ditching the cash register in a taxi.

The 22-year-old caught a cab to the Fitzroy North store on Wednesday, stabbed the female employee, stole the till and tried to flee in the same taxi before being stopped by passers-by, police allege.

The man ran away but was later arrested. He has been refused bail to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday charged with armed robbery, intentionally causing serious injury and burglary.
