Review for Vic's coronial appeals process

Victoria is to scrutinise laws governing the processes of appealing and setting aside the findings of its Coroner's Court.

The Coronial Council of Victoria will review the Coroners Act 2008, examining the interests of families, the history of existing provisions and how other states operate, it was announced on Friday.

Currently, a finding can be appealed generally within six months and on a question of law in the Supreme Court.

A case may be re-opened if a coroner deems a fresh investigation appropriate and is satisfied there are new facts and circumstances.

If a new investigation is refused, that decision must be appealed in the Supreme Court usually within 28 days.

Attorney General Martin Pakula said on Friday the review would check whether the existing laws were working appropriately.

A final report will be delivered in November 2017.
