Reforms to help deter Vic youth crime: LIV

The Law Institute of Victoria says the state government's suite of reforms to address youth crime will help deter young offenders from graduating to the adult prison system.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced sweeping youth justice reforms on Monday that will include longer jail terms and tougher bail conditions for teenage criminals.

LIV president Steven Sapountsis said the intensive supervision component in the control orders would help promote rehabilitation while providing strict boundaries.

"A lot of these young people come from troubled backgrounds and need skilled support to divert them from a life of crime," Mr Sapountsis said.

The orders can include curfews, restrictions on who the offender can associate with and requires them to comply with an education, training or employment plan or risk being sent back to detention.

Victoria Legal Aid also welcomed the announcement but holds concerns over a plan to see more children's cases heard in higher courts.
