Newsagency smashed in early morning Melbourne ram raid

A newsagency shopfront was smashed to pieces in Melbourne early this morning in an apparent ram raid.

Police believe a stolen Hino truck reversed into the front of the store on Smith Street, Collingwood, at about 5.30am.

The two occupants of the truck were unable to break into an ATM at the front of the newsagency, and fled east on Johnston Street in a Toyota Hilux.

Nobody was at the premises at the time and there were no injuries.

Scott Layton, the co-owner of a pub nearby, told Today he had heard what sounded like two men arguing before they drove off.

"It sounded like, you know, a glass bin being thrown onto the road so obviously I woke up," he said of the crash.

"I live upstairs, so yeah, it was not a nice way to wake up."

The truck was stolen on December 29 in Dandenong South.
