Palmer United Party candidate calls Victorian state election 'invalid'

A Palmer United Party candidate will seek to overturn the Victorian election result, claiming a significant number of votes were invalid.

The matter will be heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Maria Rigoni, who stood unsuccessfully as a PUP candidate in the Northern Metropolitan Region, has lodged a petition with the Supreme Court claiming the Victorian Electoral Act was breached by the record number of pre-poll votes.

The court documents lodged last month by Ms Rigoni claim "willy nilly" changes to electoral laws, under the guise of vote counting efficiency, had affected the integrity of the poll result.

The document says people who lodged a pre-poll vote, without clearly demonstrating why they could not vote on polling day, should not have their vote counted.

About 1.1 million Victorians cast an early vote before polling day on November 29.
