Police are trying to piece together the final moments of an elderly fisherman who drowned in a regional Victorian lake.

The 82-year-old's body was found floating near an upturned boat on Lake Eppalock in Kimbolton, 130km northwest of Melbourne, by fishermen about 12.20pm on Thursday.

Police say the Ardeer man parked his grey Hyundai with boat trailer and launched his boat from ramp two off Sunset Drive that morning.

"Investigators believe the man was returning from his fishing trip when he somehow ended up in the water," police said in a statement.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner."

Investigators would like to speak to anyone who saw the man when he was at the lake.
