A group representing Uber drivers has written to the Fair Work Ombudsman calling for an investigation into the operator's pay rates.

Ride Share Drivers United says Uber has "failed to meet driver demands and increase the base rates to sustainable levels".

It wrote to the ombudsman in Victoria on Wednesday asking it investigate.

The group says once Uber drivers factor in the cost of their car maintenance, petrol and insurance, the wage they earn is typically well below award levels in the transport and hospitality sectors.

It's understood Uber has not heard from the FWO on the matter.

An Uber spokesman on Wednesday said more than 18,000 Victorians drove for the app because they enjoy "flexible income" and "being their own boss".

"We know that Uber partners have the option to drive on a range of different rideshare apps and we work hard to ensure we're offering the best experience and economic opportunities possible so they continue to choose Uber," he said in a statement.
