Police in Victoria are ramping up efforts to track down ice labs by expanding forensic analysis of the drug.

An extra $4.5 million is being spent on crime fighters in lab coats who will help police analyse ice samples for chemical profiling that can used to identify or match ice "signatures" to syndicates and gangs.

"You will see more clandestine labs detected through this - that's part of curbing the growth," Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton says.
