Police may investigate former Vic Speaker

Victoria's former parliamentary Speaker may face a police probe for rorting a second-residence allowance, even though he's paid it back.

Police confirmed on Thursday the request would be assessed by an investigator along with another for embattled former deputy Speaker Don Nardella.

Shadow attorney general John Pesutto wrote to Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton on Thursday asking for police to investigate if Mr Languiller made false statements on his electoral enrolment forms.

"It appears that during 2016, if not earlier, My Languiller intended to live at a property in Queenscliff as his principle residence but did not actually do so," Mr Pesutto wrote.

He said the government had refused to provide answers in parliament and therefore police should investigate as a "matter of urgency".

It appeared Mr Languiller did live at the seaside Queenscliff property but as 2016 wore on, he had to spend more time in Melbourne caring for his children and elderly parents, parliament heard earlier this month.

After being caught claiming the allowance in February, he repaid repaid $37,800 and admitted his actions fell outside community expectations.

Mr Pesutto also wrote to police earlier this month regarding Mr Nardella.

He paid family $200 a fortnight to say he lived at their seaside property in Ocean Grove and not his suburban electorate to claim $100,000 in allowances.

Mr Nardella quit the Labor Party rather than agreeing to Premier Daniel Andrews' demand he pay the money back.
