Prime Minister Tony Abbott has questioned the judgment of a magistrate who granted bail to an alleged terrorist sympathiser.

Victoria's Deputy Chief Magistrate Jelena Popovic granted bail to Khodr Moustafa Taha last week, despite opposition from police.

Taha is accused of sending threatening messages to Victoria Police and is due to reappear in court on January 22, to also face weapon and child exploitation material possession charges.

"It does seem a very questionable bit of judicial judgment," Mr Abbott told Fairfax radio on Wednesday.

"You really want to see a bit of common sense on the bench."

The Victoria Police Association and state government are investigating whether a formal review should take place.
