Passengers injured in speeding Vic train

A train driver was on his final warning when he sped more than 80km/h over the limit in regional Victoria, injuring passengers.

The train crossed a loop - a stretch of track allowing trains to pass - at Wallan, north of Melbourne, in July 2015 at 97km/h.

That was despite the 15km/h limit and the train passing two low speed signals, an Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation found on Tuesday.

The V/Line train swayed "violently", passengers were thrown from their seats and one in a wheelchair was also injured.

The buffet car attendant reported the incident to V/Line and asked the driver to tell the Network Customer Centre about it.

The driver said he went a "bit quick" over the points in Wallan but that "everything was OK".

Investigators found he also asked that the incident not be reported to service's Regional Driver Supervisor, as was protocol.

The driver was on his final warning following multiple incidents where he failed to stop at platforms and red signals.

He was relieved of duty when the train stopped at Benalla, where an ambulance crew met passengers.

The ATSB found the driver did not handle the train effectively or immediately report the severity of the incident to V/Line or the Australian Rail Track Corporation.

The bureau also found V/Line did not have a procedure specifically requiring other V/Line employees to report incidents if a driver did not.

V/Line has since put in place a procedure addressing speed risks and updated their policy on reporting incidents.
