Pair of whales splash along Victorian coastline

Two playful whales have been filmed swimming in the bay off the coast of Mount Martha, on the Mornington Peninsula.

Video from the 9NEWS chopper captured the whales splashing in Port Phillip Bay about 1pm after a caller to a Melbourne radio alerted listeners to the discovery.

One of the mammals was shown leaving large ripples in the water after slapping its tail.

Whales typically begin arriving along the Victorian coastline around May, before making a return journey to Antarctica, according to Visit Melbourne.
