Man dies in collapsed Melbourne trench

A man working in a trench on a new Melbourne housing estate has died after the trench collapsed.

The man aged in his 20s was believed to be laying sewerage pipes in Cranbourne East when the trench collapsed just after 2pm on Wednesday.

Police found his body just after 9pm.

The man was working on the Tangemere Way estate before his coworkers raised the alarm when he went missing.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the man had been "heavily trapped" by debris.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were all at the scene, and it took them seven hours to find the man's body.

WorkSafe investigators were also at the scene.
