Man arrested over Vic dam crash

A man is in custody and a young mother fighting for life after a car plunged into a Victorian dam.

The 32-year-old man was driving the vehicle in Healesville, northeast of Melbourne, when it veered off the dirt driveway and into the dam at 10.20am on Saturday.

The Seven Network says the couple were on their way to hospital to see their sick newborn baby.

The man managed to get out and pull his 36-year-old wife from the car.

Paramedics worked on the woman, named by Seven News as Kerry Arrow, before she was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

The Healesville man is currently in custody and assisting police with their inquiries.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives remained at the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The car was pulled from the water and taken for forensic testing.
