Obese Vic rapist loses bid to lodge appeal

A morbidly obese rapist, who masqueraded as a drug lord and told young women he would kill their families if they did not have sex with him, has lost his bid for freedom.

Noureldin Derwish wanted to appeal his conviction on 13 counts of rape and charges of threatening to kill and false imprisonment, for which he is serving a jail term of 12 years and three months.

His crimes include handcuffing one of his victims to a hotel room pole and raping her.

Derwish had filed an application for an extension of time to lodge the appeal, but the Victorian Court of Appeal on Tuesday found the interests of justice overwhelmingly required the application be refused.

Lawyers for Derwish had argued the judge in his 2013 trial made an error in allowing coincidence evidence to be heard.

Derwish met his young victims, then aged 17 and 23, at train stations and told them lies about being a drug lord before threatening to kill their families if they did not perform sex acts with him.

He offered the first victim drugs in exchange for sexual favours.

She refused but eventually agreed to meet him at the Formula One Hotel in Fawkner after he threatened her family.

He told her he had a gun before raping her and then handcuffing her to a pole next to the bed.

He told her he knew where Osama Bin Laden was living, before he jumped on her and raped her again.

He then raped her several more times and told her he had people watching her.

Derwish lied to his second victim about having a strip club and a diamond company and offering her a job at the first one, then the other.

When they met at a Broadmeadows shopping centre in June 2011 Derwish told the victim he was a major cocaine importer and he needed to be seen with her so that she could be his alibi.

He said that if she told anyone he would rape and kill her whole family, her friends and her boyfriend - and make her watch.

He told her he was tracking her phone.

The victim said during the attacks she felt suffocated because Derwish was a big man, and that her hips hurt.

Derwish will serve a minimum of eight years before being eligible for parole.
