Boy seriously injured after falling onto train tracks when school bag snagged carriage at busy Melbourne station

A boy remains in a serious condition after he was pushed onto train tracks and struck when his school bag became snagged on a carriage at a busy Melbourne station yesterday afternoon.

The Year 7 boy was standing with friends near the edge of a platform at North Melbourne Station just before 4 pm yesterday when his bag became caught on the train, causing him to fall onto the track, his school confirmed.

"A fellow student pressed the platform emergency button and contacted Triple-Zero, while other students communicated clearly with transport authorities," St Aloysius College North Melbourne principal Mary Farah said.

"As of 8.30am this morning, the student remains under medical care. The College's thoughts, prayers and support are with the student and their family."

Firefighters spent more than 30 minutes using hydraulic jacks to lift the train wheels after the boy's leg became trapped underneath it, according to Fire Rescue Victoria.

"The extrication was lengthy, lasting between 45 minutes to an hour, however we were safely able to get the young person to Royal Children's Hospital," Ambulance Victoria paramedic Alex Hemsley said.

"Very traumatic scene for all involved."

The boy was rushed to the Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition.. He is now in a serious, but stable condition.

Counselling is being provided to impacted students, staff and families, the college said.
