A nine-year-old boy has died, and three other children are in hospital after a single-vehicle crash in Victoria's east.

Police said a 12-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident, which happened when the car left the road and rolled at Lindenow South just before 5pm on Sunday.

The girl was flown to the Royal Children's Hospital along with a 12-year-old boy, who police say has serious injuries.

A seven-year-old boy with minor injuries was taken to Bairnsdale Hospital.

Police believe the crash happened when the driver, a 32-year-old Lindenow South woman, lost control on a bend in the road.

She was not injured and is being questioned by police.

Police initially reported that the deceased boy was five, but have since confirmed his age as nine.
