New frontline recruits revealed at Victoria's Ravenhall prison

The newest recruits to Victoria's prison system have hit the ground running on all four legs.

A team of 11 dogs and their human handlers are highly skilled and ready to work after graduating from intensive training courses, preparing them for the frontline.

The specialists dogs are trained to take down dangerous offenders, as well as sniff out contraband and illicit drugs.

The metropolitan remand centre was the scene of the state's largest prison riot in 2015 when hundreds of prisoners caused $12 million dollars damage.

This specialist team of skilled operators has almost doubled since then in a bid to avoid a repeat of the chaos.

There's now 50 dogs and 150 humans working in the security and emergency services group which carry out operations at prisons right across the state.
