Crown is set to build a new luxury five-star hotel and apartment complex in Melbourne, with up to 2000 jobs created.

Situated on Queensbridge Street in Southbank, the 84-floor structure will climb 300m high.

Adding to the existing suite of accommodation, including Crown Towers, Crown Promenade and Crown Metropol, the new hotel will not feature any gaming floors.

Crown has partnered with Schiavello Group, which currently controls four parcels of land opposite the casino.

In a statement, Crown Resorts Chairman James Packer said: "This project will create hundreds of additional hospitality and tourism jobs and training opportunities and it demonstrates Crown's confidence in Melbourne as a world-class tourism destination".

The Committee for Melbourne, a group which aims to further Melbourne's interests, supported the initial plan.

"I think it's a great endorsement for the city that we actually have a need for five-star luxury accommodation," CEO Kate Roffey said.

While the Crown empire began in Melbourne, it has since spread to Perth, with a six-star hotel and casino planned for Sydney and a complex in Brisbane.

Internationally, Crown owns two resorts in Macau, another in the Philippines, a high-end casino in London's West End, and plans for projects in Sri Lanka and Las Vegas.

Crown said the company is still finalising designs for the project, with an initial investment of $50 million.

More details will be released in 2015.
