Vic police to share rape DNA evidence

New DNA evidence will be shared with other jurisdictions to help police find the man who brutally raped a woman in Victoria almost 20 years ago.

The 24-year-old woman was looking for a taxi outside the Lyric nightclub in Geelong on September 23, 1995 when she accepted an offer from a man for a ride home.

When she questioned the man about the way he was going, he became aggressive and punched her in the face.

He then raped her in a secluded area before dropping her off at the side of a road in the early hours of the morning.

Victoria Police's cold case and missing persons squad says new methods of testing have uncovered fresh DNA evidence.

The evidence does not match anyone currently on the Victorian sex offenders register so it is being shared with authorities in other jurisdictions in the hope it will solve the case.

Police are hoping to uncover the age and ethnicity of the suspect.
