'The truth is out there': NASA balloon spooks Victorians

Victorians who witnessed a mysterious slow-flying bright light in the sky this evening can rest assured they do not need to prepare for an alien invasion.

The object, which prompted concerned tweets and even a call to the police, has been identified as a NASA Super Pressure Balloon which launched last month in New Zealand.

One witness who contacted 9News.com.au was driving along the Hume Freeway between Benalla and Euroa when she saw the light in the sky.

“We were driving along and this guy was pointing and waving to us, and pointing to the sky. I thought, 'what’s he doing?’” she said.

“I looked up and there was this weird thing in the sky, and there was a lot of other cars stopped to look at it too.

“It looked like a white circle with lines across it. It just didn’t look right.”

She said she called the police who took a report of the incident.

Several members of the Victorian Storm Chasers page also posted images of the balloon looking for answers.

"Anyone have any idea what the light is in the southern sky???" one user wrote.

The Super Pressure Balloon launched last month in Wanaka, New Zealand and is currently hovering over Victoria at an altitude of 33.5km.
