Safer hospitals after Victorian election

CCTV cameras in emergency rooms and separate rooms for violent patients will be installed in hospitals whichever party wins the Victorian election.

The coalition has pledged $34 million to improve safety in hospitals and for paramedics if it wins on Saturday.

It comes a month after Labor promised $20 million to reduce violence against hospital and emergency services workers.

Premier Denis Napthine said hospitals would be upgraded to make them safer for workers.

"This package will include further funding for CCTV, further funding for improved design of our emergency departments to improve safety," Dr Napthine told reporters on Monday.

He said clients with mental health issues and drug or alcohol problems would be better cared for under the plan.

"We've also provided additional funding to look after people in mental health facilities, to segregate men and women, and make women particularly safer," he said.

Labor's announcement included building separate families' and children's waiting rooms, isolation rooms for violent patients and installing CCTV cameras.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said $10 million in grants would go to hospitals and health services for capital works, with a further $10 million in grants set aside for mental health services.

"The dedicated professionals in our public health system are being threatened, abused and assaulted - it must stop," Mr Andrews said in October.
