Napthine pledges CCTV funds

Police will have immediate access to extra CCTV footage monitoring Victoria's streets under a re-elected coalition government.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said the Safer Streets Victoria proposal gives police automatic access to the CCTV footage of any private business that signs up to a voluntary register.

Dr Napthine said CCTV footage had been crucial in solving the Jill Meagher murder case, but lamented the wait police faced to access the video.

"We saw the success of using private CCTV from businesses in the dreadful case involving Jill Meagher, and in that case it took several days for police to access that CCTV," he said.

"What we want to do is to set up a system across Victoria where Victoria Police have automatic and immediate access to private business CCTV."

CCTV footage from a Brunswick fashion store proved crucial in helping police solve Ms Meagher's murder in 2012.

Dr Napthine said hundreds of businesses had already shown interest in signing up to the voluntary register.

The proposal is a cornerstone of Dr Napthine's $37 million crime prevention pledge, which commits funds for extra public CCTV cameras and anti-crime groups such as Crime Stoppers and Neighbourhood Watch.
