Man killed over Vic burglary suspicions

A Melbourne man was stabbed to death because his attackers allegedly thought he was a suspect in a burglary.

Garry Coulson, 30, died after he was attacked in bed at his temporary Werribee address last year.

Daniel Nathan Parry, 37, of Bacchus Marsh, has pleaded guilty to an amended murder charge over Mr Coulson's death - unintentional killing in the course or furtherance of a crime of violence.

Two co-accused, Andrew David Lacey, 23, and Edward Charles Hewett, 22, pleaded not guilty to the same charge on Tuesday and were committed to stand trial.

Parry's home was burgled late in June last year, with electrical goods and decorative knives stolen, court documents show.

He believed Mr Coulson was responsible and allegedly took Hewett and Lacey with him when he went to see Mr Coulson on July 5.

Parry worked with Mr Coulson's brother, Michael Lees, at a Bacchus Marsh meat processing business, where Hewett and Lacey had also previously been employed, the Melbourne Magistrates Court has heard.

On the night of July 5, Parry asked Mr Coulson's mum, Patricia Coulson, for her son's address, telling her he wanted to give her son some money and catch up with him, the court heard.

Ms Coulson said she gave Parry the Werribee address, but also warned: "You better not go up there and hurt him".

"I wouldn't have given Daniel the address if I had known what Daniel was going to do," a teary Ms Coulson told a committal hearing this week.

Prosecutors allege Mr Coulson was assaulted with a baseball bat and stabbed after he was ambushed while in bed with his girlfriend that night.

He died on the way to hospital in an ambulance.

Parry allegedly told police he had "cracked" Mr Coulson with the bat and a fight broke out before Mr Coulson produced a knife, court documents show.

He told police they struggled over the knife and he didn't really know what happened, but Mr Coulson "dropped" and Parry was holding the knife.

Lacey and Hewett, who also face a charge of aggravated burglary each, are due to face the Victorian Supreme Court for a directions hearing on Thursday.
