The parents of murdered Melbourne teenager Cayleb Hough hope they're closer to justice after a man has been charged with murdering him.

A 28-year-old Kawarren man was charged with one count of murder on Saturday and faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday.

He was arrested on Friday and remanded in custody to reappear in court on June 2.

Cayleb's remains were discovered in a shallow mineshaft in the Lerderderg State Park in Bacchus Marsh in March.

The Chelsea Heights 17-year-old went missing on December 20.

"You see a photo and you always just want to see him again, it breaks my heart. I can't handle it," his mother Melanie Crespo told Nine News on Sunday.

She said she was in shock when a man was charged.

Cayleb's father Steve Hough said he hoped justice was on the way for his son.

"There is still a long road ahead but we believe we are one step closer to seeking justice for Cayleb," he told Nine News.
