A man charged with gunning down another man at a Melbourne shopping centre car park has avoided fronting a court.

George Marrogi is accused of murdering 24-year-old Kadir Ors at Campbellfield Plaza on Monday afternoon.

The 27-year-old was due to front the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, but did not appear in the dock.

"He preferred not to be in court and for us to represent him," Marrogi's barrister Christopher Dane, QC, said.

Police allege Marrogi shot Mr Ors multiple times, hitting him in the legs and buttocks.

Mr Ors, of Southbank, died in hospital on Monday night.

The court heard there was a large amount of CCTV to be canvassed and investigations were ongoing.

Marrogi, of Greenvale, was remanded in custody and his matter was listed for January 31.
