Vic man in court over wife's murder

A man accused of killing his wife and assaulting their children made no application for bail in a brief Melbourne court appearance.

Bassam Raad appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 34-year-old Broadmeadows man is accused of murdering his wife Zeinab Taleb on or before June 17 and intentionally causing serious injury to three children aged two, four and six on July 4.

Dressed in a grey, long-sleeved shirt, a clean-shaven Raad sat quietly in the dock as the prosecution filed for a committal mention hearing in November.

His lawyer Katarina Ljubicic did not apply for bail.

On Wednesday night, Raad pleaded for bail in an out-of-sessions hearing so that he could see his children.

"I am a loving father. My heart is breaking. I want to see my kids," Raad told the bail justice.

Outside court, a relative of Ms Taleb told reporters Raad was "a scum bag".

"What am I going to say, he has been remanded. Leave him in there. I hope he rots in there," the relative told reporters.

The father-of-three was arrested on Monday night after his children were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Homicide detectives soon linked him to the murder of a then-unidentified 27-year-old woman, whose battered body was found dumped about two kilometres from the family's Broadmeadows home.

The body was wrapped in a quilt and found by a passing jogger on June 17.

During the out-of-sessions hearing Detective Senior Constable Miranda Stubbs said forensic officers found a "considerable amount of blood" inside the home, leading them to believe Raad had killed his wife there.

He was remanded in custody to return to Melbourne Magistrates Court on November 10 via video link.
